2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Awards

May 9, 2018 | Ivy Publications

The 2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival kicked off with the Monticello Cup Awards at the Jefferson Theater on Monday, May 7. We were honored to again be sponsors and to be present for such a wonderful event where winemakers and vineyard owners alike join together to celebrate the remarkable vintages of the Monticello AVA.

Prior to the evening, 10 respected wine industry professionals judged wines from the 33 wineries that make up the Monticello AVA, a subsidiary of the Jeffersonian Wine Grape Growers Society. Veritas Vineyard & Winery won this year’s Monticello Cup for their 2015 Petit Verdot “Paul Shaffer’s 7th Edition.” Winemaker Emily Pelton, assistant winemaker Elliott Watkins, Bill Tonkins, the vineyard manager, and Paul Shaffer all accepted the Monticello Cup at this year’s award ceremony. Pelton shared a few words with all in attendance, reminding us that “with every vintage, we are building the strength of our region … and telling the story of our soils.”

Overall, there were 13 gold medal winners, 27 silver and 15 bronze winning wines. In addition to Veritas Vineyard’s 2015 Petit Verdot, Keswick Vineyards’ 2016 Cabernet Franc Estate Reserve and Flying Fox Vineyards’ 2014 Petit Verdot were the other two reds in the “Top 3 Red” category. This year’s “Top 3 Whites” were Afton Mountain Vineyards’ 2016 Chardonnay Estate Reserve, Michael Shaps Wineworks’ 2017 Rosie Rosé and Trump Winery’s 2012 Blanc de Blanc. The festival will continue this week with numerous pairing events and will conclude with a Grand Tasting Event on Saturday, May 12, at the Sprint Pavilion on the Historic Downtown Mall. The tasting event will showcase of over 25 local wineries and will also give wine lovers the chance to purchase some of their favorites! The day will begin with a VIP catered tasting at 12:30 p.m. with the general event starting at 1:30 p.m. Click here for information on where to get tickets.

During the tasting event, attendees will be able to enjoy one flight of tastings per winery while learning about the different vineyards and their practices. Wine & Country will join in the festivities with our beautiful booth, where attendees will be able to create a wine charm as well as take home a copy of the new Book Six of Charlottesville Wine & Country Living.

Congratulations to Veritas Vineyard & Winery for winning the 2018 Monticello Cup! We are looking forward to another year of enjoying local award-winning wines.

February 28, 2018 | Ivy Publications

Last night, the 2018 Annual Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine Competition Gala was held at the Main Street Station, a chic newly-renovated Richmond venue. During the competition, now in its 36th year, esteemed judges sampled over 440 Virginia wines, judging based on appearance, aroma, flavor, overall quality and commercial suitability. The judges awarded 99 Gold Medals to the best wines with 12 of the highest scored wines selected for the prestigious Governor’s Cup Case. Out of those top wines, all made with 100% Virginia fruit, the wine with the highest overall score was selected as the Governor’s Cup Winner. The judges enthused about how it is an exciting time to be involved in Virginia wine, as vintages are expressing place well and there is a emergence of Virginia signature styles coming forth.

Local winery King Family Vineyards, represented at the Gala by winemaker Matthieu Finot and owners David and Ellen King, as well as other family and team members (below, bottom right), was awarded its third Governor’s Cup by the honorable Governor Ralph Northam. King Family’s winning wine, a 2014 Meritage (below) was aged for 18 months in French oak and composed of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Below (bottom left), Winemaker Matthieu Finot, who has been with King Family Vineyards since 2003, pours a glass of the celebrated 2014 Meritage among the many congratulations of peers and wine enthusiasts.

Established in 1998, King Family Vineyards was one of six Monticello AVA members to be chosen for the 2018 Governor’s Cup Case along with Barboursville Vineyards, Early Mountain Vineyards, Jefferson Vineyards, Keswick Vineyards and Veritas Vineyard & Winery. In addition, CrossKeys Vineyards of the Shenanhoah Valley was selected to be in the prestigious group, as well as Northern Virginia vineyards, North Gate Vineyard, Potomac Point Vineyard and Winery and Virginia Cellars. Along with its Governor’s Cup winning-wine, King Family had three other wines awarded with gold medals this year.

Barboursville Vineyards’ 2014 Paxxito was selected for the Governor’s Cup Case and Barboursville was awarded five additional gold medals for various vintages and wines (below, top left).
