Remembering Horton Vineyards Founder Dennis Horton

We at Ivy Publications and Charlottesville Wine & Country Living would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Horton family for the passing of Horton Vineyards’ founder and winemaker Dennis Horton. We’d also like to express how thankful we are for his influence in the growth of our local wine country.

Dennis’ journey as a winemaker began back in the 1980s after he and his wife, Sharon, moved to Madison, Virginia. Dennis saw the great potential in the area for growing grapes, which ultimately led to the planting of his family’s first vines in their front yard. While he cultivated a small home vineyard, Dennis continued to study different grape varieties and growing techniques. His search took him to France’s Rhone Valley and California, where he and his wife Sharon learned more about the Viognier grape, which Horton Vineyards is recognized for bringing to the Commonwealth.

In 1988, Dennis and his business partner, Joan Bieda, acquired 55 acres in Gordonsville, Virginia. Using the open lyre system they learned in California, Dennis and Sharon established what is now Horton Vineyards on the new acreage and harvested their first crop in 1991. In 1992, the couple began constructing an underground cellar, and then in 1993, they celebrated the first crush at Horton. That same year, Horton gained national recognition for producing a superb Viognier that won first place at a California tasting competition. In 1994, the couple purchased more acreage and began planting Bordeaux, Portuguese and Spanish varietals, as well as more varietals from the Rhone Valley many of which were rare, if not new, for Virginia growers.

In 2011, Dennis was awarded the Gordon W. Murchie Lifetime Achievement Award; and today, Horton Vineyards produces 42 wines, farms 100 acres and is celebrated as a great influencer in the Virginia wine industry, having also reintroduced Norton grapes to the area. Below, Dennis oversees his last harvest, which he had faithfully done every year since the establishment of Horton Vineyards.

Dennis passed away at the age of 72 and is survived by family members who will continue the legacy of Horton Vineyards. Still a family-owned and operated vineyard, Dennis’ wife Sharon, their daughter Shannon, and granddaughter Caitlin will continue to build on Dennis’ success at Horton for years to come. We are so grateful for Dennis’ pioneering work and passion for winemaking. His larger than life presence and fierce love for the wine industry will be greatly missed.

Horton Vineyards Showcased at Smithsonian

Last night, Horton Vineyards was featured at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History’s Winemakers’ Dinner, an annual fundraiser for the museum’s American Food and Wine History Project. This year, the museum collaborated with and celebrated the Rhône Rangers, a group of 100 U.S. wineries dedicated to strengthening the American Rhone wine movement.

The Winemakers’ Dinner followed an informal seminar held the previous day with Randall Grahm, owner and winemaker of Bonny Doon Vineyard, Doug Margerum, owner and director of Margerum Wine Company, Shannon Horton of Horton Vineyards, Tony Wolf, director and professor of viticulture at Virginia Tech and Dave McIntyre of The Washington Post.

Prior to the dinner, guests were served cocktails in The Smithsonian Castle’s Schermer Hall while they learned about Rhône wines. American Rhône-style wines are made from the same grapes that have flourished for centuries in France’s Rhône River Valley. Their continued growth in vineyards across the U.S. can speak to their versatility with food and wide range of rich flavors, as well as to the skills of American winemakers.

For a winery’s wine to qualify as a “Rhône Rangers” wine, 75 percent of the content must include one or more of the 22 traditional Rhône grape varieties. Of the 22 Rhône varieties, the red include: Carignan (Carignane), Cinsault (Cinsaut), Counoise, Grenache, Mourvedre (Mataro), Muscardin, Syrah (Shiraz), Petite Sirah, Picpoul Noir, Terret Noir, Vaccarese and Classic Red Blends. For the whites, Bourboulenc, Clairette Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains, Picardin, Picpoul / Piquepoul Blanc, Roussanne, Ugni Blanc, Voignier and Rhone White Blends make up the list of Rhône wines.

Following the cocktail hour, guests moved to The Commons in The Castle for dinner. Tablas Creek Vineyard, Horton Vineyards, Ridge Vineyards, Bonny Doon Vineyard and Margerum Wine Company were all selected for the menu. Cedric Maupillier, the chef proprietor of Convivial in Washington, D.C, designed and served stunning dishes that paired perfectly with the wines. First to be served was Horton’s 2016 Viognier paired beautifully with a bright and delicious daurade carpaccio.

As each wine was served, winery representatives introduced the wine and spoke to their production methods. A special tribute was made to Dennis Horton who passed away earlier in the day and was a long-time Rhône Ranger. Below, dinner guests toast to Horton’s life and legacy.

Horton’s first plantings for Horton Vineyards included Viognier varietals from the Rhône Valley. In 1993, just four years after the opening of Horton Vineyards, Horton gained national recognition when his Viognier won first place at a California tasting competition. As a result, vintners throughout Virginia began introducing Viognier into their vineyards—making Viognier one of the region’s most successful varietals today. We were so pleased to attend the Smithsonian’s annual Winemakers’ Dinner and celebrate pioneers in the American wine industry. It was equally exciting to see Virginia’s Horton Vineyards honored for their great contributions to food and wine in America.

Fabulous Floral Creations Bloom at Caspari

As we say so long to spring and hello to summer this week, we want to share one of our favorite events from this Spring—Caspari’s fabulous floral creations event during Historic Garden Week.

Over the past 13 years, Caspari, a local retailer of stylish paper products influenced by a variety of materials—fine art, textiles, ceramics and interior design—strives to showcase the works and patterns of established artists and museums around the world. In continuing their vision, Caspari hosted its annual “Floral Fashion” event, where local florists artistically highlighted everything spring and summer have to offer. Pulling inspiration from Caspari’s stationery and accessories, each florist brought to life their own beautiful vision of artistic attire through unconventional ideas, styles and patterns.

As guests wandered from one display to the next, they snacked on delicious cheese and crackers, crostini and fruit and sipped on wine, fulfilling all of their senses at once.

A Pimento Catering (photo above and at left below), inspired by Caspari’s lemon-print items, combined different elements for their creative display. The cleaver fascinator topped with pheasant feathers was a charming feminine accessory pulled together with garlic bulbs and lemons, succulents, moss and feathers.

Stacy Torrence of Fresh (photo at right below) played off of Caspari’s blue and white dinnerware to create a lovely setting. Inspired by spring’s innocence before leading into summer, Fresh used jade plants on ballet slippers, greenery around a simplistic, yet classic, child’s summer dress and other minimalist floral elements that are sometimes overlooked when other plants are in full bloom.

Floral Images Design Studio in Charlottesville (photos below) created a breathtaking display by using a variety of items. Their vision carries all the way from the rose hat to the moss-coated high heels topped with the same pink rose. Pearl earrings adorned the heels, complementing the stunning necklace. The bodice of this masterpiece, composed of Caspari napkins, leads into a rose festooned sash and white orchids before reaching its full-skirt, ball-gown style, crafted of white feathers. A spray of lilac was also added for a sweet spring scent.

Gregory Britt with Tourterelle Floral Design (photos below) was festive with their garden-style arrangement. Stemming off of Caspari’s pink floral napkins and tableware, Tourterelle added sprays of cherry blossom and a custom hand-crafted tulle to incorporate the pretty shades of summer. Eucalyptus, ivory trailing down the skirt, roses, candles and protea were also used to display the softness of the season.

Southern Blooms (photos below) pulled in the bold, yet soft, style of Caspari’s products to pair with this gorgeous securely fastened, floral collar necklace. By using grape hyacinth, delicate shades of lavender and purple, many hues of green and chartreuse, white roses and ranunculus, Southern Blooms brought to life an envy-worthy adornment.

Hedge Fine Blooms (photos below) inspired all with their tropical-inspired hat and ballet flats. Using orange poppy, white roses, variegated and grape hyacinths with chartreuse flowers, Hedge created botanical accessories that speak to a heavenly oasis.

Pharsalia (photo at left below) gave guests a highly structured display comprised of blue and orange hues, reminding us that the garden is beautiful year-round. Designed to show the natural growth of the stems, this dramatic arrangement of greenery, bittersweet berries, dried hydrangea and seed pods paired well with seashells, dried flowers and moss.

Whereas, Blue Ridge Floral Design’s display (photo at right below) grew from the inspiration of Caspari’s pink and green-themed paper items. A sash of pink and a white rose belt cinched the waist of a bodice of large tropical leaves before dropping to a skirt decorated with bows that resembled delectable ribbon-candy.

Once again, Caspari’s “Floral Fashion” event was a successful affair, and we were grateful to be in attendance. Movers and shakers in the local garden industry came together to celebrate not only the local florists who help lead Charlottesville’s identity in artistic fashion, but also Virginia’s Historic Garden Week, known as “America’s Largest Open House.” We look forward to seeing the amazing creations at next year’s event.
