Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival Celebrates Local Food and Wine

May 19, 2018 | Ivy Publications

The 2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival celebrated its seventh year last week with an expansion of programming. This year, guests could attend a multitude of wonderful wine-paired dinners, brunches and special events during the five days leading up to the festival’s well known “Grand Tasting” event on Saturday.

The festival kicked off with the Monticello Cup awards ceremony Monday evening, an elegant gathering at the historic Jefferson Theater highlighting many of the regions best wines from the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA). Guests enjoyed award-winning wines and learned more about local vineyards, including the 2015 Petit Verdot “Paul Shaffer’s 7th Edition” from Veritas Vineyard & Winery, which won the coveted Monticello Cup Award

Throughout the week of the festival, restaurants and wineries hosted food and wine events. Chefs welcomed winemakers into their restaurants to celebrate our region’s best in farm-to-table cuisine. Below, Timbercreek Market’s Executive Chef, Tucker Yoder, collaborated with winemakers Chris Ritzcovan of Jefferson Vineyards and Gabriele Rausse of Gabriele Rausse Winery for a delectable four course dinner event at Back 40. Yoder prepared an exquisite menu that included canapés, roasted leeks, buttered crab, shaved pork and dry aged ribeye from Timbercreek Farm.

Wednesday evening, Afton Mountain Vineyards partnered with Jake Busching Wines for a dinner on Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall at Brasserie Saison. The dinner featured four exquisite courses from Chef Mike Perry which featured many locally sourced ingredients that brought bright flavors to the eight beautifully paired wines.

On Friday, guests enjoyed the 3rd Annual Monticello AVA Sparkling Wine Brunch at Afton Mountain Vineyards. Winemakers (in the order photographed below) Jonathan Wheeler of Trump Winery, Damien Blanchon of Afton Mountain Vineyards, Maya Hood White of Early Mountain Vineyards, Elliott Watkins of Veritas Vineyard & Winery and Matthieu Finot of King Family Vineyards all gathered to serve their best sparkling wines that were beautifully paired with delicious appetizers from Brasserie Saison.

The festival then culminated with the “Grand Tasting” event at the Sprint Pavilion on Saturday where hundreds of wine lovers were able to meet winemakers and try wines from 25 different local wineries. We also enjoyed meeting readers and fans at the Charlottesville Wine & Country festival boutique!

The week of fabulous events also included an elegant pre-festival winemakers dinner at Fleurie with King Family Vineyards and Veritas Vineyard & Winery. Taste of North Garden, A delicious winemakers dinner with First Colony Winery, Loving Cup Vineyard & Winery, and Wisdom Oak was held at Dr. Ho’s.Taste of White Hall, a charming winemakers dinner with Grace Estate Winery, Stinson Vineyards, and White Hall Vineyards, was held at the White Hall Community Building. Forked on Main and Lovingston Winery collaborated on a lovely Winemaker’s Dinner. The popular 2nd Annual Rosé Lunch and Historic Farm Tour were hosted by Blenheim Vineyards. Loving Cup Vineyard led a fascinating organic vineyard and winery tour while Glass House Winer hosted a fun concert by the Bobby Midnight Band.

A big thanks and shout out to sponsor Mercedes Benz of Charlottesville! Cheers, and see you next year!

Celebrate Mom with an Al Fresco Gathering

May 11, 2018 | Ivy Publications

Mother’s Day is almost here! If you are hosting a celebration this year, we have some last-minute inspiration to help you plan the perfect gathering.

Immerse yourself in the setting. With its vibrant spring blooms and warmer weather, May is a great month to plan an outdoor event. Consider setting a table outside near fresh flowers or beneath a beautiful tree for a seasonal affair. If you prefer to gather indoors, consider opening windows, allowing gentle breezes and spring scents to waft through your home during the event.

Embrace the season on your table. Fresh flowers and greenery are always a must for any spring gathering, whether you choose to pick from your garden, a farmers market or a local nursery. Consider mixing small arrangements with larger ones to highlight a myriad of blooms for your table setting. Once you have created your floral displays, you can use leftover stems to adorn plates.

Be prepared to toast. For any celebration, it is a good idea to serve a drink with which guests can toast. Local sparkling or white wine, or hand-crafted cocktails like mimosas are perfect for an al fresco Mother’s Day brunch or luncheon and a special toast to mom.

Don’t forget the sweets. No gathering is complete without a sweet treat, or two. They make for a perfect party favor or ending to a meal.

If you are not hosting an event this year, or are looking for other ways to celebrate mom, be sure to check the Charlottesville Welcome Book calendar for local Mother’s Day events!

2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Awards

May 9, 2018 | Ivy Publications

The 2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival kicked off with the Monticello Cup Awards at the Jefferson Theater on Monday, May 7. We were honored to again be sponsors and to be present for such a wonderful event where winemakers and vineyard owners alike join together to celebrate the remarkable vintages of the Monticello AVA.

Prior to the evening, 10 respected wine industry professionals judged wines from the 33 wineries that make up the Monticello AVA, a subsidiary of the Jeffersonian Wine Grape Growers Society. Veritas Vineyard & Winery won this year’s Monticello Cup for their 2015 Petit Verdot “Paul Shaffer’s 7th Edition.” Winemaker Emily Pelton, assistant winemaker Elliott Watkins, Bill Tonkins, the vineyard manager, and Paul Shaffer all accepted the Monticello Cup at this year’s award ceremony. Pelton shared a few words with all in attendance, reminding us that “with every vintage, we are building the strength of our region … and telling the story of our soils.”

Overall, there were 13 gold medal winners, 27 silver and 15 bronze winning wines. In addition to Veritas Vineyard’s 2015 Petit Verdot, Keswick Vineyards’ 2016 Cabernet Franc Estate Reserve and Flying Fox Vineyards’ 2014 Petit Verdot were the other two reds in the “Top 3 Red” category. This year’s “Top 3 Whites” were Afton Mountain Vineyards’ 2016 Chardonnay Estate Reserve, Michael Shaps Wineworks’ 2017 Rosie Rosé and Trump Winery’s 2012 Blanc de Blanc. For the full list of medal winners, click here.

The festival will continue this week with numerous pairing events and will conclude with a Grand Tasting Event on Saturday, May 12, at the Sprint Pavilion on the Historic Downtown Mall. The tasting event will showcase of over 25 local wineries and will also give wine lovers the chance to purchase some of their favorites! The day will begin with a VIP catered tasting at 12:30 p.m. with the general event starting at 1:30 p.m. Click here for information on where to get tickets.

During the tasting event, attendees will be able to enjoy one flight of tastings per winery while learning about the different vineyards and their practices. Wine & Country will join in the festivities with our beautiful booth, where attendees will be able to create a wine charm as well as take home a copy of the new Book Six of Charlottesville Wine & Country Living.

Congratulations to Veritas Vineyard & Winery for winning the 2018 Monticello Cup! We are looking forward to another year of enjoying local award-winning wines.

2018 Design House Sneak Peek

May 4, 2018 | Ivy Publications

The 2018 Design House opens tomorrow, May 5! This popular fundraiser for the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE) features a local home that is transformed by talented area designers. The 2018 Design House, located off Garth Road, features the work of 13 interior designers, each assigned various rooms and spaces, along with two landscape designers. Charlottesville Wine & Country had a great time at the preview party last night, viewing this must-see home firsthand and having the opportunity to support such a worthy cause.

Entering this gorgeous home, guests will find it’s all about the drama. The striking foyer by Franny Hurt Design (below, left) is in a beautiful chocolate brown. We loved the space’s textured wallpaper and stenciled floors she chose. Moving to the right of the foyer, guests enter the stunning living room (below, right) designed beautifully by Chloe Ball of Kenny Ball Antiques and The Shade Shop. How gorgeous is this emerald green game table and show-stopping lamp at the far side of the room? The Inchyra Blue by Farrow & Ball walls allow the room’s antiques to really shine.

To the right of the living room, guests will find a delightfully peaceful yet striking guest suite (below). Inspired by the room’s natural lighting, Moyanne Harding of Interiors by Moyanne created a chic room and a bathroom you’ll love using the season’s hottest blush color palette.

Guests walking through the beautiful kitchen will enter a must-see family room that connects to an incredible screened-in porch. When you enter, you’ll know why you want to see the colorful family room in person! But, we couldn’t resist sharing the amazing enclosed deck (below) designed by Caroline Minsky of The Artful Lodger. The space has a chic and casual Boho flare with cozy floor pillows and even a hanging hammock chair. Believe it or not, everything is in outdoor-friendly fabrics!

Upstairs on the second floor, guests will find the spacious master bedroom suite designed by Cheryl Jarvis Southworth of Designs by Cheryl (below). This room was all about luxury and glamour. The gorgeous hand-painted stencil design by Diane Williams of Art to Di For on the ceiling must be seen in person. It’s stunning! This is only one of four gorgeous bedrooms guests will enjoy on the second floor. If you want to see the others, you’ll have to take the tour, and we promise it will be well worth it!

For the working woman, guests will enjoy the fabulous home office to the right of the foyer—perfect for any #sheboss (below). Andrea Gibson, ASID of the Gibson Design Group (pictured below, right) designed a graceful and professional space that can host clients as well as provide inspiration for the creative working woman.

And, speaking of #sheboss, Ellen Beard of Patina Home created another space on the second floor that perfectly serves the creative woman. Her fresh and inviting craft room will effortlessly accommodate a guest who might spend the night as well. Wait until you see what she’s done with the closet! And, of course, the man of the house is not ignored! The third floor has an office retreat by Grand Home Furnishings, of which all men will be truly envious.

As you tour all four levels of the house, be sure to visit the charming basement, where you can browse a delightful art gallery space with works by local artists, shop the Design House boutique and visit the Design House Café with light lunch and refreshment options.

We cannot wait for you to see the extraordinary work by local designers showcased in this year’s Design House. The 2018 Design House will run May 5–20, from 10am–4pm each day, except Wednesdays and Thursdays which have extended hours from 10am–7pm. Parking is available at Olivet Presbyterian Church (2575 Garth Road, Charlottesville, VA) where shuttles are provided to take guests to the home. Tickets are available here, and you can visit cvilledesignhouse.com for more information about this wonderful and very worthwhile fundraising event. You don’t want to miss it!
